Our work covers the full spectrum of applying theory to real world issues. We are seeking two outstanding candidates at eitherundergraduateor postgraduate level to go directly onto PhD study in areas of psychology that align with our staff interests.
The scholarships will pay the equivalent to Home/EU fees and provide a maintenance stipend (currently ?13,590 for 2012/13) for up to three years.Internationalstudents are welcome to apply (if successful, international students paying international fees will be expected to pay the difference between the Home/EU fee and international fee).
Applications are welcomed from undergraduates who have or are expected to have a first class BPS accredited degree and from postgraduates who have or are expected to have a distinction at Masters level in a psychological discipline. We aim to award one scholarship for applicants entering at undergraduate level and one scholarship at postgraduate level, depending on the strength of applications.
You must also include a research proposal of 1,000-2,000 words (including references) with your application. Candidates are encouraged to contact potential supervisors prior to submitting an application.

However, we do expect a clear and concise summary of your PhD topic area that includes key studies related to the project, some indication of why you feel that the topic area is interesting and worthy of research, and some indication of the aims and objectives that you feel are appropriate for the research you wish to conduct. In addition, you should cover some information relating to the methods that you envisage using to enable you to answer your research questions.
- If you are also applying for the VC Scholarships you must indicate that you wish your application to be considered for both competitions in a covering letter along with clearly marked research proposal(s). You may wish to submit more than one research proposal depending on the VC Scholarship projects you are applying for.
By what criteria will applications be judged?
The following criteria will be used to judge applications and rank candidates:
- The applicant's current academic profile and any achievements or experience in areas related to their chosen research topic
- The applicant's potential for undertaking a successful PhD project, as demonstrated by the application form, the outline of the proposed research project, and the interview (for shortlisted candidates)
